Private VLAN

Private VLAN

Private VLAN

Private VLAN is the type of VLAN which is nested in one VLAN. One VLAN will have more multiple VLAN’s it is called private VLAN. Private VLAN’s only can be configured in transparent mode. These VLAN’s cannot communicate with each other. These all secondary VLAN’s are configured in same network ID. For private VLAN’s there will be one primary VLAN in which all other VLAN’s will be configured.

Primary VLAN

This is the main VLAN in which multiple private VLAN’s can be configured. These private VLAN’s known as secondary VLAN’s.

Secondary VLAN

There are two types of secondary VLAN’s, which are mentioned below

  1. Community VLAN
  2. Isolated VLAN

Community VLAN

In this VLAN all ports can be communicate with each other who will be the part of same VLAN. A primary VLAN can have multiple community VLAN’s but these all VLAN’s cannot communicate with each other. This VLAN cannot communicate with the other type of Secondary VLAN which is isolated VLAN. The all devices which are in community VLAN can communicate with devices configured with promiscuous port.

Isolated VLAN

In this type of secondary VLAN devices cannot communicate with each other. This VLAN cannot communicate with first type of VLAN which is Community VLAN. A primary VLAN can have only one isolated VLAN. More than one isolated VLAN cannot be configured in one primary VLAN. Devices in isolated VLAN can communicate with devices configured on promiscuous port.

Promiscuous Port

Devices in promiscuous VLAN can communicate with both secondary VLAN’s (Community & Isolated). A primary VLAN can have multiple promiscuous ports.
