Fig 1: Router | Networking Device

Router is the networking device that is work on the layer 3 of the Open System Interconnection Model and that layer is network layer. This device is the very intelligent device. This device known as the layer 3 device and it is also known as the unicasting device for the data. Router is the device which is use to forward the data to the next router that exist in it's routing table. Router forward the packets to the other router for the delivery of the packets to it destination. A router or gateway is a hardware device that directs or routes data packets between two or more networks. Routers perform the traffic directing function on the Internet. The function of the router is to interconnect multiple networks, using various protocols. Routers have one or more interfaces that connect them to the network they are to connect. Each interface is assigned a specific address.

Following are the features of the Router:

  1. Router is the complex task handler device.
  2. Router is used for the sorting purposes and also for the distribution basically sorting will be done on the base of the network address and distribution will be done on the base of the host address.
  3. Router is the one to one means unicast device for the data.
  4. Router broadcast and multicast the for the exchanging of the routing table when dynamic protocol run.
  5. Router is the device which is use to integrate Local Area Network and Wide Area Network.
  6. Router is expensive device if it has more slots basically router price is the directly proportional to the ports of the router.
  7. There are two port on the router for the access of the configuration terminal:
    • Console Port: By this port you can add the wire to PC and take configure terminal of the router.
    • Auxiliary Port: By this port you can access the router like the dialup method in which modem is use.
